New SAE Standards on Additive Manufacturing: World’s First for Aerospace Industry

Industry standards play an important role in helping the public by ensuring quality and consistency in the products produced for the marketplace. The emerging field of additive manufacturing (AM) enables parts to be printed in 3D from electronic files created on a computer. These parts are being used in critical applications such as aircraft engines. It is imperative that these parts be manufactured and tested to the strictest standards. SAE International has created the Aerospace Material Specification committee on Additive Manufacturing (AMS-AM). The FAA provided SAE with a task request in support of the formation of a standards committee to develop aerospace material specifications and other related documents that would assist the FAA in developing guidance material for AM certification — certification of parts for use on aircraft such as parts for commercial jets that carry passengers over large bodies of water where there is no room for error or inferior quality.
