Medical Materials Innovation Pioneers Honored

After working together for five years to develop new materials and applications for medicine, Professor Inge Herrmann and Researcher Alexandre Anthis have been awarded the ETH Zurich Latsis Prize and the Lopez-Loreta Prize, respectively. The two share the same motivation: they both aim to understand the needs of clinicians and patients from the ground up in order to develop new solutions for current medical challenges. 00:00:00 [Music] in my research group we focus on innovating materials and devices for healthcare and we work a lot with clinical uh Partners they describe their clinical needs and we address them with material based Solutions I'm a project leader here at eth working within the laboratory of nanoparticle system engineering of Professor in Herman over

00:00:24 the last years I've been working on a set of new high performance sealant adhesives in the form of patches that would go directly on organs of the abdominal cavity the reason why uh we end at working with these is primarily because following surgery very often you have the leakage of digestive fluids that come out of patients this can be absolutely deadly and uh we needed a

00:00:49 solution we talked about how we could potentially address this problem with Material Science approaches we had the idea to even integrate non-electronic sensors and this is a really really new approach so no one has done that before and since we've managed to achieve this we got a lot of patient and doctor's requests and this really shows us almost every day that there is a really really

00:01:15 evident clinical need I find coming up with new things and then seeing them being used as the ultimate goal of what I do the little bit of glimpses I've been getting uh both by working with surgeons and uh with other Engineers has uh always been feeding this uh very big passion of mine to really see the things I do being used whenever we discover that there is a need we're very

00:01:45 motivated to find a solution we have lots of different projects in lots of different areas um we have a strong focus on gastrointestinal um surgeries but we also have a focus in women's health um and then wound healing and mus skeletal diseases we get feedback from clinicians and sometimes even patients and families that our Technologies are useful and that they are addressing an

00:02:10 important clinical need and this brings us a lot of joy and fulfillment
