Remote Wireless Network Communications for Emergency Services

The Wireless Research Center at the University of Canterbury and Tait Communications and were recently awarded at the 2014 KiwiNet Research Commercialization awards ceremony held in Auckland, New Zealand. Since 2007, the two New Zealand organizations have combined forces in the development of technology in LTE broadband, narrowband mobile radio, coverage extension, enhanced reliability, and situational awareness. Recently, researchers from the University of Canterbury have developed a remote wireless network communications for emergency services and utility response teams. The portable system can be deployed in remote locations where there is no cellular communication.

00:00:00 [Music] in order for emergency responders to operate they need to have timely accurate and succinct information traditionally Public Safety organizations have had to rely upon uh purely voice based Communications we're moving into using broadband data where we can have uh we can send photos or video quite easily so rather than having

00:00:33 to rely upon a police officer for example describing the characteristics of a suspect they can send a photo or they can capture a video of of the suspect in a major crisis situation you may lose your Communications infrastructure so you need to have ways to establish that Communications even when infrastructure is lost the system will not go down the system is portable

00:00:57 it can be deployed in remote areas where there is no cellular communication the primary impact of This research for New Zealand is enabling Tate in its export of Technology Tate is a kiwi company based here in Christ Church predominantly using graduates from the University Canary something like 90% of their technology is sold to International markets the team at Tate

00:01:23 and the team at Wireless Research Center have worked very closely and very collaboratively and what it has resulted is been the degree of confidence and Trust where we know the intellectual properties that are being generated are being put into good use with the aid of some of our technology um should we have another major incident like another Christ earthquake hopefully some of the

00:01:45 technology that we produce can help make a difference
