Right Angle Spiroid Gear at MD&M West
Learn about the Right Angle Spiroid® Gear at MD&M West 2015, from Jeff Randall, Sales Engineer for maxon precision motors. The Right Angle Spiroid Gear is designed to achieve maximum torque with minimal space, and is designed to be configured with maxon’s 22mm and 32mm DC motors.

00:00:06 hi my name is jeff randall and i'm a sales engineer for maxon precision motors here at the md m show in anaheim california i'm here to talk to you today about our new right angle gear drive our rad it's a new design newest product in our maxon gearbox family there's two sizes a 22 millimeter front mounting face design as well as a 32
00:00:30 millimeter front mounting face design these designs match our existing planetary gears for compatibility and issues like that these are spiroid right angle gearboxes so they're not worm drives they're spiroid gears and the difference between a worm drive and a spiroid gear is that the spiroids have a much higher
00:00:54 contact ratio relative to a worm gear so we can get higher torques in a smaller package the gearboxes themselves are made out of aluminum which also add to the torque per unit mass ratio some really nice features about these gearboxes are one uh other than their right angle
00:01:16 there's two versions one is a back drivable version it's our low ratio four to one and then we have a non-back drivable version a 31 to 1 ratio the back drivable version or the 4 to 1 ratio is a very high efficiency so this is another thing it's going to be a little bit different than warm drives but the 31 to 1
00:01:37 is lower efficiency but if you don't want to have a break in your system you want something to hold the non-back drivable gearbox could be a solution to actually having a break so we could get rid of a component some nice features in here are the mounting to the motor itself we use a spline interface that's going to make it a
00:01:59 zero backlash interface as well as it's going to be quiet the gearboxes themselves have a very low backlash the different sizes range from a 0.25 degree backlash to a 0.35 degree backlash no load the shaft itself is very stiff and will not uh or will have minimal flexure under high loads as well these gearboxes are going to have a high torque per unit
00:02:26 volume um they're also what we consider the smallest right angle gearboxes available uh that we've seen in the world actually so the 22 millimeter is kind of the stand the smallest standard product you can get in a right angle gear drive they mount to a variety of our motors and we have multiple interfaces for multiple motors but the other nice thing
00:02:50 is we can actually put a additional gearbox behind it so while we only have two gear ratios we can use one of the hundreds of other gearboxes that we have to back it up so you can get much higher gear ratios depending on what gearbox we put behind it some other things that are unique is that on the back side of the gearbox if
00:03:13 we want to do a custom and extend a shaft we could actually mount an encoder an absolute or relative to the back of the gear head which will be mounted directly to the output shaft of the gearbox so if you want to know exactly where your gearbox is the encoder can be on the shaft of the gearbox as opposed to encoder on the
00:03:34 motor so that's a potential nice feature for positioning applications thanks for stopping by our booth at the anaheim show if you want more information on our right angle gear drives our rads then uh please contact maxon motors at 508-677-0520 or go to our website maxonmotorusa.com
00:04:01 you
