4D Camera 'Eye' to Improve Robot Vision, Self-Driving Cars, and VR

Stanford University engineers have developed a '4D' camera with an extra-wide field of view that captures nearly 140 degrees of information. This video shows the first images from camera. With robotics in mind, the team created this first-ever single-lens, wide field of view, light field camera. Currently, robots have to move around, gathering different perspectives, if they want to understand certain aspects of their environment. This camera could allow them to gather much the same information in a single image. The researchers also see it being used in autonomous vehicles and augmented and virtual reality technologies.
