Charlotte Rocketry Team Breaks NASA Record
Over the past decade, Charlotte's Rocketry Team has developed into a national force in the NASA Student Launch Initiative Competition, winning multiple times.
The team had to design a payload that could locate the landing position of the launch vehicle, without the use of GPS. Learn more about the team and its crowdfunding campaign.

00:00:00 so we're trying to get everything ready as fast as we can this is like the only shot if anything goes wrong like it's just going to go wrong [Music] the rocketry team works on the NASA University student launch initiative competition being able to be a part of that set myself up for the Aerospace field being able to see the whole design
00:00:26 process the students worked through it tackled so many problems on the way and by the end of the project they have something they can fly in in a real world [Music] [Music] [Applause] but NASA gives us a very specific payload requirement for this year we had
00:00:51 to design a payload that could locate the landing position of the launch vehicle and then we couldn't use DPS to do that really had to design your payload a really unique way and in an efficient way in order to accomplish the tasks a big part of the competition is the documentation and now so we'll look at that look at our safety look at our project plan and say all right these
00:01:11 guys know what they're doing we'll let them in the competition so we have two or three 250 page documents there are presentations that we give to NASA each individual person will give anywhere from a thousand to some people get 1500 hours takes a lot of time we spend a lot of overnights working on a project this large and working with you know computer
00:01:32 Engineers electrical engineers mechanical engineers it really was a rewarding process and I think I learned a lot [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Music] we get there we have two hours to set up our goal altitude was 5000 feet we hit
00:01:57 4998 feet and he was like let me hear that again like that's there's no way within two feet after it sent an email to us saying we broke a NASA record and they started doing third place overall and it wasn't us second place overall wasn't us so we were already a little worried so our team picture popped up on the screen I was already crying just shaking I was it was just like time
00:02:20 stopped probably probably the best feeling ever the big schools in aerospace engineering watching us was a very happy moment for me group of students that get together they're very dedicated and it is a big conglomerate of multi-disciplinary Engineers compared to other colleges it's a lot of hours it's a long year
00:02:41 after putting in all that time throughout the entire year finding out at one was was really great [Music] thank you
