Transforming the Future While Spanning the Full Semiconductor Ecosystem

Watch this video to learn how Duke University is spanning the full semiconductor ecosystem — from initial materials and design work through to the actual testing of devices and their own assembly and fabrication, and even to the system level.

“We must be prepared to take advantage of this opportunity," said Jerome P. Lynch  , Vinik Dean of Engineering at Duke. "Not just as individual researchers and institutions, but as a multidisciplinary and multi-stakeholder group that can spur growth in the semiconductor industry for the entire southeastern region and the United States as a whole.”

00:00:00 [Music] if you think through a single day in your life thousands of times in a day you interact with something that has to do with stomach Avengers the need for ongoing research efforts to boost our future capabilities in this space is absolutely critical the vision is that we can actually introduce new types of manufacturing

00:00:33 that's more eco-friendly relies Less on extensive energy and toxic gases and is able to produce similar electronic performance and application capabilities I'd say the first major aspect of what we have here at Duke that makes us distinct from all the other great institutions doing research in semiconductor technology is that we have an ecosystem that covers the research

00:01:01 landscape all the way from initial materials and design work through to the actual testing of devices and their own assembly and Fabrication and even to the system level where we're designing circuits and system applications from those devices and showing new ways to use those systems for different technology paths and to solve different problems

00:01:28 so by recruiting faculty that bring in the expertise that spans the full semiconductor ecosystem we're able to do things as a team as an institution that you can't really find in most other comparable places [Music] by bringing more resources into a very well positioned and resourced institution like duke it will allow that

00:01:56 type of Workforce Development in the students and it will allow us to do the kind of work that can be as relevant as possible to transforming the future we have to find ways to sustain that through our academic institutions and Enterprise because that is where the next generation is going to come from and contributing to and and carrying forward everything that we make possible
