Riding in a Self-Driving Car at 1 of the 10 U.S. AV Proving Grounds

Watch this video to see Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi ride in a self-driving car with engineering faculty and student researchers to cruise the Larson Transportation Institute Test Track. The van navigated itself thanks to Penn State student research that is helping to guide the future of transportation.

00:00:00 so we're going to jump into the autonomous here this is a standard mini van and number two we added a lot of equipment like we have screens over here yep if you are a programmer or if you're new programming you know this is a standard Urban T system fully open source huh the program is running we are collecting the data so when we are running you also see

00:00:26 in the students this student has um keyboard and computer so he's in a little bit he's going to run a program to control the vehicle amazing and then we have a big red button over there so anytime anything goes wrong just push that button and the vehicle will stop okay so it'll be very safe let's go I want to see how it works are you guys ready yeah and by the way these are two

00:00:49 wonderful students what an opportunity for them to work with you that's wonderful so Chi is going to graduate this year he's in his fifth year and Yin just finished his first year okay nice and my um last year I graduated my first PhD student and um she's a female student uh she's becoming an assistant professor at OD Domino University starting from July oh that's

00:01:14 wonderful yeah t how you guys ready yeah we are ready okay in that case we can go so the student will click this button engage mhm and then the vehicle will start driving okay let's go let's go so now it shows that we're in auto mode that is pretty freaky we are going to drive slowly no more than 30 mph uh so it it will be very safe um but as I mentioned uh the

00:01:40 vehicle drive by itself so the students don't interact with the with the vehicle but we have a safety driver so if anything goes wrong we can have the someone taken over yeah yeah yeah yeah and then as I mentioned the thing we really love is when we are driving the sensors are collecting the data we are collecting those data visualizing the data processing of data in real time

00:02:02 this is computer science stuff mechanical engineering stuff but I can see how soon the human machine interaction the psychologist this there's so much that they've studied it'll be amazing yeah this is so cool there's a very interesting um sort of debate going on meaning we know human 93 3% of the time human is a problem well yes exactly so we want a vehicle to

00:02:28 drive not like a human right right and the ethical people with ethics with the decision Mak yeah on the other hand on the other hand if a vehicle doesn't drive according to your habit you will have a tendency to take over like you all say that why don't you speed up let me take over so so so so in terms of human factors there's a a lot of research uh going on as well that how

00:02:50 how vehicle can drive like human but in the meantime saver so we are finishing one run here what do you think do you have any questions or com that was beautiful driven guys this is so great for us to have thank you five F day
