Designing Secure Automotive HSM Solutions

SPONSORED BY:

Modern vehicles require advanced cybersecurity to protect critical systems. A fully open source and portable hardware security module (HSM) framework simplifies embedded security across diverse automotive platforms by offloading cryptography, key management, and secure boot to dedicated hardware. This approach helps manufacturers meet increasingly stringent regulatory requirements and industry standards for automotive cybersecurity.

This 60-minute webinar will offer a deep dive into automotive security solutions, including a lightweight secure bootloader built to integrate seamlessly with HSMs. It will explore how next-gen HSM frameworks and secure bootloaders can combine to protect firmware integrity and application core boot. Attendees will learn how these modern secure bootloaders leverage the HSM client for secure boot and how running it on the HSM core adds a secondary layer of integrity protection.

Highlights include:

  • The role of HSMs in modern vehicle security
  • Overview of an innovative HSM including design, crypto support (PQC, SM Ciphers, FIPS 140-3), and hardware compatibility
  • Secure boot and HSM integration
  • Firmware integrity via flash, HAL, and boot authentication
  • Demonstration on Aurix TC3xx

An audience Q&A session will follow the technical presentation.

Speaker:

Bill Phipps, Software Engineer, wolfSSL

Bill Phipps is a seasoned embedded software engineer, who serves as a Software Engineer for wolfSSL. He spent 15 years as a U.S. defense contractor focused on anti-tamper and cyber security solutions for airborne and sub-sea military systems prior to joining wolfSSL in 2023. Bill holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering and is often heard saying, “How can you code without an oscilloscope?” He has a fervent passion for low-level hardware interfacing and spends his days optimizing assembly-based boot sequences and worries about cache alignment. In his free time, he enjoys reading technical manuals and NIST publications.
