Solar-Powered, Hydrogen Fuel 'Rig' Floats on Water

A chemical engineering team at Columbia University  has developed a novel photovoltaic-powered electrolysis device that can operate as a stand-alone 'solar fuels rig' that floats on open water. Instead of extracting petroleum from beneath the sea floor like a conventional oil rig, this PV-electrolysis rig would produce clean hydrogen fuel from sunlight and water. This video shows high speed video comparison of asymmetric and symmetric electrodes during operation.
