What the HexSense?

HexSense is a kind of sensor node that can be ballistically deployed to the desired area and collect data of interest. Each sensor node is a modular design and can carry different sensor payloads. Watch this video to learn more.

00:00:01 so this is the hex sense node it's a sensor node uh it's solar powered and it's designed to be ballistically deployed uh that means that it will be shot out of a cannon uh of some sort in that form it will be folded up like this uh and when it lands the pedals spring out like this uh that means that if it lands on its side it will stand up specifically at the moment we're looking

00:00:25 at lunar exploration the terrain is highly volcanic that mirrors many of the features we expect to see on the moon so I think that's 5 days now well we found that it functions perfectly uh all the data that we wanted to get were getting great um but we did discover that the battery uh that runs this deployment sequence uh has actually run out on both of our nodes and we didn't expect that

00:00:48 we expected to get about um on the order of 10 uh deployments from these and so far we've gotten three well we'll do a redesign um we'll increase the capacity and we'll make it much easier to recharge so this mission is about testing it's about iterating you know you're never going to get a product right U or a technical platform right on the first try so the point of coming

00:01:08 here was to see the failure points uh and we saw a couple but uh that's great for us and we got more data that we wanted on top of that so it's great all of this is kind of a a dress rehearsal we need to test test test there's no substitution for testing our technology in these really harsh environmental conditions [Music]
