Renishaw Supports Formule ETS With Additive Manufacturing Project
Canadian team Formule ETS who participates in Formula SAE begin the journey of adding additive manufacturing technology to the design of their racing car in 2023 by 3D printing the upright parts of their vehicle. With the help of additive manufacturing the goal is to reduce the weight of the racing car to 400 pounds, in which they accomplished by having the vehicle weighing 399 pounds thanks to the AM technology.

00:00:02 we are an fsse team based in Montreal that has been participating in engineering competitions for the past 35 years we have been one of the few teams from North America to compete oversea in Formula students of events in areas such as Germany Hungary Austria Spain only to name a few one of the goal of our team is to uh reduce the weight of the wall
00:00:42 car by using the additive manufacturing we were able to save 30% on the ight while having the same stiffness as the previous machine upright we are aiming for a car that is going to be 400 lb so reducing the weight as much as we could while having the same mechanical strengths and performances is one thing that we are really looking
00:01:07 for When selecting a part for additive manufacturing we would look for the biggest gain of stiffness versus weight uh so a part could be designed stiffer for the same weight or as stiff but lighter the upright is one of the most critical Parts on the car its main function is to link the wheel to the suspension and it sees various load
00:01:34 cases whether the car is cornering accelerating or braking uh it must resist to these forces and meet the stiffness targets it was a pleasure to be able to work with the formula ETS team this past season to produce the additively manufactured uprights on our run am 500q platform the use of additive
00:01:57 manufacturing and generative design helped contribute to a 30% overall Mass savings on the car and the team success in 2023 is a testament to their design engineering and Manufacturing accomplishments we are excited to be able to work with the team again in 2024 [Applause]
