Melles Griot Optics Group (Rochester, NY) has released the ExtremeService™ shutter designed for operation in environmental conditions involving variations in temperature. The shutter is suitable for OEM applications including night vision cameras and infrared illumination systems such as analytical, metrology, and photonics instrumentation that require compact size, low weight, and low-voltage operation.

Operating temperature range is -40°C to 70°C. The shutters offer a proprietary, low-friction blade coating that provides high emissivity in the infrared spectral range, making them suitable for calibrating uncooled sensors in FLIR (forward-looking infrared radar) systems. The shutters also offer a 25.2-mm clear aperature and are available as 12-V or 3-V solenoids, and in normally open or normally closed versions.
