The National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) was founded in 2000 to support nanotechnology research and development in the U.S. Since then, there has been terrific growth in that area, with applications including medicine, electronics, materials, energy production, and consumer products. The NNI defines nanotechnology as the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers. The unique significance of these materials is that they are governed by quantum effects and therefore have many unusual properties.
