Renesas Technology America, Inc. (San Jose, CA) has added two new application processors to the SH-Mobile series. The SH-MobileL3V2 offers additional video formats, high-resolution video capture, and enhanced functionality to control image quality. The smallpackage SH-MobileUL is suitable for use in mainstream mobile phone models. The processors support the H.264/MPEG-4 AVC and VC-1 movingimage compression standard.

The devices achieve 30 fps (frames per second) encoding and decoding performance at VGA definition while consuming very low power. Both devices have a low power SH4AL-DSP CPU core that achieves a high processing performance of 478 MIPS at an operating frequency of 266MHz.

The SH-MobileL3V2 has a dedicated 24-bit audio DSP function that handles music coded using AAC or MP3. A camera interface built into the application processor allows direct connection of an external 5-megapixel- class camera module. The SH-MobileUL processor features an optimized set of peripheral functions specialized for multimedia playback, and a compact 8 mm × 8 mm package.
