The cartridges of an inkjet printer were filled with aqueous lithium chloride solutions at different concentrations.

Natural motion in plants occurs because of cellulose fibers absorbing and releasing water. Scientists developed a simple method to produce self-folding origami structures based on this concept. The method requires only a standard inkjet printer filled with lithium chloride solution in the ink wells.

Now, the research team will focus on using the method to develop mechatronic devices. To do this, they will combine this approach with a previous technique for printing electrical wiring onto paper also using a standard printer.
