Olympus (Center Valley, PA) has released the DP26, a high-resolution digital color camera for microscopy. Incorporating a 5-megapixel, scientific-grade CCD sensor, the DP26 allows users to browse samples without the use of eyepieces.

The DP26 generates a live image feed, achieved via an advanced progressive scan mode, which is available at all supported resolutions and relies upon a 1394b FireWire connection to the computer. A frame rate of 16 frames per second is possible at the resolutions offered by most laboratory monitors. For specialty equipment capable of displaying 5 megapixels, the system provides a refresh rate of 7 fps. The DP26 software packages feature automatic shading correction, rapid white balance adjustment, auto-exposure, and measurement tools. A file manager also records exposure settings, magnifications, and other parameters for future reference.
