What’s the most exciting part of your work?
The most exciting part of my work is witnessing the moment when students grasp a complex concept or skill and realize their potential. It’s incredibly rewarding to see them connect the dots, especially in technology and engineering, where abstract ideas come to life through hands-on projects. Empowering students to create, innovate, and solve real-world problems fuels my passion for teaching. Every day, I get to inspire the next generation of thinkers and makers, and there’s nothing more fulfilling than that.
What is one major challenge you’ve faced in your career and how did you overcome it?
One major challenge I faced in my career was breaking into the technology field as a young woman of color. Early on, I encountered barriers like a lack of representation and mentors who understood my background. To overcome this, I took the initiative to teach myself programming and sought out communities that offered support and resources. This experience not only strengthened my resolve but also inspired me to become an educator who champions diversity and inclusion in STEM, ensuring that future generations have the support they need to succeed.
What advice do you have for young women engineers aspiring to be leaders?
My advice for young women engineers aspiring to be leaders is to embrace your unique perspective and never underestimate the value you bring to the table. Stay curious, keep learning, and seek out mentors who can guide and support your growth. Don’t be afraid to take on challenges, even when they seem daunting — those are the moments that build your leadership skills. Most importantly, advocate for yourself and others, and create spaces where diversity of thought and experience are valued. Your leadership will inspire others to follow in your footsteps.
