eDirectory is a computer program that makes it possible to view entries in the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) telephone directory by use of PalmPilot™ (or equivalent) personal digital assistants.

When one uses eDirectory, a single click causes the downloading of a current copy of the directory (which is updated nightly) from a server. The downloaded directory data can be sorted and searched. The program can append a “JPL” category and save directory information in a file that can be imported into the Palm Desktop™ software.

This program was written by William Vlahos of Caltech for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. For further information, access the Technical Support Package (TSP) free online at www.techbriefs.com/tsp under the Software category.

Overview

The document is a Technical Support Package for the Telephone-Directory Program (NPO-30427) developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). It outlines the features and benefits of a software application called eDirectory, which serves as an electronic phone book designed to replace the discontinued paper version used at JPL.

eDirectory was created to address the limitations of existing software applications, specifically to improve the process of importing JPL phone book data into Palm Pilots. The software allows users to download a current copy of the JPL Directory with a single click, enabling sorting and searching capabilities. It also includes a feature to append a "JPL" category to the entries, facilitating easier access to JPL contacts.

The document highlights the advantages of eDirectory over other similar applications, such as BOSS and Finger, noting that it is faster and easier to use. Users can search for individuals by name, location, or phone number, making it a versatile tool for JPL staff. The software is compatible with almost all computers at JPL and supports multiple operating systems, ensuring broad accessibility.

The software's development was motivated by a desire to learn a new programming language and to create a solution that would benefit not only Palm Pilot users but also those who prefer a straightforward electronic phone book. The program is described as mature and has performed well in testing, with no additional development costs anticipated.

The document also includes information about contributors to the project, funding sources, and the status of the software. It emphasizes the importance of the software in supporting NASA's aeronautical and space activities, indicating its potential value for future projects.

Overall, the Technical Support Package serves as a comprehensive overview of the eDirectory software, detailing its functionality, advantages, and relevance to NASA's mission. It also provides contact information for further inquiries and resources related to NASA's Commercial Technology Program, encouraging users to explore additional technological developments.
